During the meeting, we can each monitor our behavior so that the ways in which we
express ourselves contribute both to the search for truth and to a spirit of unity. The following
guidelines can help us to do so:
1) presenting our ideas with clarity, courtesy, dignity, and moderation;
2) sharing what our conscience dictates, even when we fear that no one else will
understand or accept what we say;
3) showing detachment from our ideas, clarifying them if necessary, but avoiding stubborn
insistence that others accept them;
4) treating others’ opinions with respect—listening with empathy and the genuine desire
to be educated about their point of view, without ever mocking, deprecating, or
ridiculing any person or idea;
5) avoiding anger or distress when others present ideas contrary to our own or seem to
disregard our contributions.
